Housing Voucher Program (Section 8)
The Housing Choice Voucher Program (commonly known as Section 8) is designed to provide rental assistance to low-income families so they can afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market.
Eligibility is based on a household’s annual income which may not exceed 50% of the median income for the area in which the family chooses to live.
There are several steps involved before receiving assistance with your rent. They are:
- Preliminary Application (form can be downloaded – see link below)
- Wait List (wait time can be over 12 months)
- Eligibility Appointment
- Lease Briefing
- Locating a suitable unit
- Unit Inspection
- Monthly payment to landlord (participants will be responsible for paying the difference between the total rent and their calculated housing assistance payment).
